So because I didn’t properly set up my webcam for recording this video turned into a podcast type of video. Discussing something I’ve been wanting to talk about for some time. And the is how I got better at the game just because Dragon Ravine was banned.

I know this video is older and you probably wont see this but have you tried dragunity guardragon? If so i would love to see a video discribing your thoughts on the deck or just a discussion on dragunitys future in general. Love your content and discussion videos
#dragonravine
I remember when ravine got banned I mixed dragunity with harpies which actually worked really well. Somehow when ravine went back to limited though I got kinda bored of ygo in general so that was it. Since now they are quite limited with the link rulings it is nothing more than a fun deck unfortunately
My fav deck was dustons….then links made it the worst deck in human history lol
#dragonravine
#dragonravine This is basically what happened to me when I started playing the game in mid-2016. I picked up monarchs and even after they got hit I refused to play anything else. I eventually got tired of losing and branched out into other decks, some of which I play to this very day. Playing other decks instead of only focusing on one really opened up my mind as a player and helped me immensely.
Also, when you streaming again big boi? Miss them.
I LOVE podcast style videos to just let run in the background. Wouldn't mind more of these!
I'm exactly as you were although mainly for financial reasons..
If/when I move away from Dragunities, I want to use a deck that's just pure brute simplicity, like Kuriboh or something, although that won't fix competitiveness issues, I feel
#dragonravine
#DragonRavineX2
I become a better player by realizing that I play a bad deck when I was salty against Altergeists 4 months ago,
#dragonravine I'm in the same boat as you were, only my boat is Blue-Eyes, and it gets support over and over. I spent over 600$ on Blue-Eyes… Can't really see myself playing anything else, I've tryed but can never learn any other deck
This is a great story to hear! I had the same problem with Gravekeeper’s for years. No matter what the meta was I would just adapt to the format and as you can assume, I had very little success. It got to the point that my stubbornness led me to quit the game back in 2011 and not pick it back up until 2016. I still have my Gravekeeper’s deck that I will break out and fool around with from time to time but it’s something that I no longer play whatsoever. So thanks for sharing your story, glad someone else has been in my shoes. #dragonravine
Rejoice Phoenix! Dragon ravine is unlimited 🙂
Are you going to make another video discussing the other side of the story? Where would you be today if #DragonRavine was never printed? I had a lot to say but realised most of my points were regarding ^that.
#DragonRavine I had a different experience to being a Dragunity player because I played Dragunities as a tempo deck instead of an aggro deck. Like you, I had been a Dragunity player since Hidden Arsenal 3 dropped until Ravine's banning. When Dragon Ravine got banned, I could not find another deck I enjoyed playing for the life of me; not because the combo strings I liked became so much less consistent, but because of how the game was evolving and how different matchups were shaping up. I took Dragunities to YCS Dallas in 2014 (Mermail/Fire Fist format) with a Mist Valley engine along with some other gimmicks and ended up with a respectable X-3. At that point though, I was getting frustrated because even though I was still willing myself to win locals, it was becoming really difficult to get an invite even though I always seemed to be in contention for an invite at the end of a regional. I switched to playing pure Artifacts midway through HAT format and when Moralltach got hit to 1, the owner of my locals hired me to be the store manager so I basically started judging locals since then. The only deck I've played with any zeal since then has been Cardians. I'm trying to find a reason to start playing again. For years, I've been keeping up will rulings, gameplay, advising former teammates on how to build decks throughout different formats, etc., but haven't found a deck that has really pulled me back into the game. Part of it might be, as I kept telling all my friends that played at the non-OTS local I ran, "oh, even if I decided to play again, whatever I do is just going to get Ogre'd anyways and I want to be able to enjoy this game". Called by the Grave is the card that's making me more interested in playing again, I just want to find a deck that does that for me too.
Dragunities was a special archetype that I think deserves legitimate revitalization (I don't think Kuse or Ascalon do this, I think the rest of the support is mediocre on a good day), but Konami won't give us because they're trying to push Rokkets as the new Dragon deck. They also seem to not think Winged Beasts deserve a legitimate shake at the meta. Can't even remember the last time a Wind deck was tiered highly. I don't think the Dux being a combo starter was spoiling as much as it was an enabler, because it was such a powerful base to combos it only got more capable as it adjusted to new eras in play. In fact, the only archetypes that achieved more of a timelessness than Dragunity were Lightsworn and Burning Abyss, both of which have in-archetype link monsters while we have…Greatfly to work with. Rule 4 isn't honestly all that terrible given we got links that enabled what the deck can do, it was rule 3 that gave me a sour feel to where the game's at now.
In my case, I don't feel like I'm a better player sine the ban because I never crutched on Ravine to make things happen for me (last time I played Terraforming was in 2012), I just feel like I don't want to play. I get asked by players who weren't around when I was at my peak if I was any good, and whenever I'm lended a decent enough deck to play, I win with it just as show that I'm still capable. Heck, I face-rolled people with Cardians at 2017 locals when I got super bored. All-in-all, I'm just waiting for Konami to print something that makes me feel like playing again.
On an unrelated note, speaking of Mermails as one of your fallbacks, can we get an updated Mermail profile? 😉
Funny enough I actually had a very similar experience as this when #dragonravine got banned. Dragunities had brought me back into the game and when Ravine got banned, rather than try something other decks, I had focused so much on Dragunities since their inception that I just thought about quitting. But some friends of mine talked me back into the game and I had to think more cohesively about my deckbuilding and in-game thought processes since I didn’t have a “catch-all” card like Ravine that could turn any single card into a Rota or Foolish. Now I play a lot of everything and have definitely grown a ton as a player in terms of mindset and mentality.
I could liste to you talk about yugioh trash all day <3 #phoneixpodcast
#dragonravine great vid man
#DragonRavine Off topic question, but so this format are you mainly going to play Goukis? Or maybe the mermails?
#dragonravine Not only do I think you are wrong, but a bit crazy, too. Let me explain:
Until now, I have never met a player who was obsessed with a single archetype while also being competitively focused for such a long time, let alone while having the means to acquire more cards. Not once. If a player is so focused on a deck, it is usually because of casual reasons. They like the look, they like the feel, they like the concept, they like their experiences, etc. The exception to this is when budget concerns are an issue, and they can't afford to blow all their cash on new cards. The casual minded aren't too concerned with growing as a player, because the game is just "play" for them. If a player is competitively focused, then they aren't affixed to a single deck, because for them the game is a series of puzzles and there isn't any sort of allegiance to a particular archetype. All they care about is growing as a player. There can be some overlap, since the casual side would still like their deck to at least function in the meta and not necessarily win championships. But in general either one side or the other is going to win out, and a player isn't going to writhe in conflict for several years.
As for not growing as a player, that also is not true. Wisdom comes with age. In particular, a general understanding of economics and human behavior. Unless somebody is very stupid to begin with, they're going to pick up more and more as they go along. Learning other decks by seeing how they play is par for the course. Recognizing the features that make a new deck good or bad is also within the realm of realistic expectation. Unless a player has actively decided to shut out critical thinking when playing the game, they are going to naturally improve just by existing in the game. Hell, I'd even argue that if I took a player who stopped after goat format and brought them back, after they learned all the new rules they'd be a better player than when they left.
The gist of it is this: your experiences are not general. You are describing how you have overcome a problem that is not common among the playerbase. The greatest mystery isn't how you stopped being that way, but what compelled you to be that way in the first place.
#dragonravine i did the same thing from 2012 to 2016 with only dark world. i quit playing it one day when i drew the nuts and still lost. that was the moment i realized my efforts were futile
#dragonravine
Really enjoyed listening to it, maybe do more like this?
My brother needs to listen to this. Stuck on Crystal Beasts.

It's hard to accept that dragunity It´s not good enough, Thank You man.. #Dragonravine
#DragonRavine
My word you sound like me with pendulum magicians…I tried mermails, and world chalice, but I can’t pilot a combo heavy deck to save my life. The only deck that I can say I’ve “mastered” was magicians. The only other deck I could play remotely well was invoked windwitch, but that was kinda helmet. #throwbacktoargstates2k17
i used to be like that but with lightsworn, my first (playable) deck was the realm of light theme deck, and i just kind of stuck with it, hell, to this day its still
sees grave effect "hey i wonder if i can combine this with lightsworns"
with grass gone though i think my era of attempting to make 60 card monstrosities is over
#dragonravine
#dragonravine
I have a request i work construction it be nice if you could do more pod cast style videos 💪🏽
#dragonravine
im the same with pendulum magicians also before you had fun playing dragunity but then you just played to win
#dragonravine I enjoyed this kinda format where it's just about your experiences with a certain deck and how it shaped you as a player. Very neat to listen to and consider for myself.
#dragonravine
THIS IS SO ME!! THANK YOU FOR SHOWING GROWTH!
